The Grants Assistance Unit (GAU) will discuss two main topics in the upcoming video teleconference on September 29, 2007. First we will discuss what to do when you receive a grant. Nothing is more frustrating that to receive a grant and not be able to get access to your funds and not know who to call for help. We will outline the specific steps to take, who to call, and where to go to get your grant implemented and operating. Next, we will discuss the services provide by our office and how schools and office can take advantage of them. It will be an informative presentation that will clarify the District’s grant processes and procedures.

The Riordan Foundation
Established by former Mayor of Los Angeles and California Secretary for Education, Richard J. Riordan, The Riordan Foundation is an organization with a mission to provide all Los Angeles students, especially those in low-income communities, with access to a high-quality education that will prepare them to compete successfully in the 21st century. Our primary focus area of giving is educational technology, and our geographic target area is Los Angeles County. We provide challenge grants for Computers in the Classroom, the English Language Development Program, the Waterford Early Reading Program, and the Wireless Laptop Lab – all of which are described in detail on our website: www.riordanfoundation.org. These grants include hardware, instructional software, installation, support, and if applicable, program training. In addition, we offer the Recreational Reading Mini-Grants, which provide $1,000 for K-5 teachers to purchase books for students to read at school and home. Please click here or go to http://www.riordanfoundation.org to learn more about our foundation and grant opportunities.
Arts Education
SB 1131 is the one-time State of California allocation for the support of the Arts and of Physical Education. The arts portion is for visual and performing arts use and estimated at $43/pupil, based upon total school enrollments from the Fall norm 2006. These funds are to be used solely for equipment, materials, supplies and professional development.
School plans and proposals are made through an online portal which will direct school administrators and arts teachers to successful completion. These funds replace the Fund 7700 per pupil allocations. School sites should complete the self-assessment, planning and budget preparation as soon as possible. All funds must be expended before June 30, 2010. Annual revisions in grant efforts may be made.
Principals should log in to the Arts SB1131 site at http://www.omar.lausd.net/ by using their email address and school location code. All expenditures of the 3-year period Plan are subject to District and State audit and must comply with all regulations.
Each Local District has established its own internal processing deadline. Site administrators or school personnel may contact their Local District Arts Resource Expert or Connie Covert, K-12 Arts Programs & Planning Coordinator, at (213) 241-6458 (connie.covert@lausd.net) for information.

Physical Education
The SB 1131, one-time, Physical Education grant provides funding for professional development, equipment, and supplies to improve standards based instruction in physical education. With these funds, teachers can expand their content knowledge and teaching skills in physical education through professional development, and students can benefit from enhanced equipment and supplies that increase the quality of learning experiences.
These funds are to be used solely for physical education equipment, materials, supplies and professional development. There is no time limit on when you have to spend the money. You will have to complete a plan that must be submitted to the local district director for approval. They will send it to the central office for a final check and the money will be released to the school.
